The project in short

This Tuxford job is a big charcoal herringbone block drive that sweeps from the road to a double garage, with a buff border tracing its curved edge and gravel either side. Tuxford is further out than most of PaveForce's work around Mansfield and Chesterfield, and the job shows block paving suiting a larger frontage as well as a small family drive.

Looking up the drive: the border follows the curve toward the double garage.

The whole frontage: brick boundary wall, tree, gravel and the new charcoal surface.

Is block paving right for a large driveway?

On a long drive the pattern and the border do the work. Herringbone keeps a large area of charcoal from looking like a single flat colour, and the buff border follows the curve all the way round, so the edge reads as designed rather than cut off. The gravel on both sides gives the drive a soft surround.

How is new block paving joined to an old apron?

The road end of the drive meets an existing red block-paved apron. Where new work joins old, the levels and the line of the edge are the details to check, because a small step or a wandering line shows at once. Ask how the new surface is tied into what is already there.

Ask James your own question
Do you work in Tuxford?

PaveForce mainly covers Mansfield and Chesterfield and the towns between and around them. Tuxford is further out. Send your postcode and James will tell you whether he can take it on.

Is block paving a good choice for a large driveway?

Yes. Herringbone and a contrasting border stop a large area looking plain, and individual blocks can be lifted for repairs. A large drive needs a sound, compacted base, so ask what goes underneath.

Who handles planning in Tuxford?

Tuxford is in Bassetlaw district, so planning goes to Bassetlaw District Council. The Planning Portal sets the national rule for front gardens. Check your own address with the council.
